About this guidance

This guidance is general information. The correct fire safety measures depend on the premises, its use, occupants, fire risk assessment and applicable legal duties.

Where it applies

BS 5839-6 is aimed at domestic premises and differs from BS 5839-1, which covers non-domestic premises.

Grades and categories

Domestic systems are commonly described by both grade and coverage category. The grade concerns the system arrangement and power/control characteristics; LD categories describe life-safety coverage.

Current edition

BSI lists BS 5839-6:2019+A1:2020 as current. Historic systems may have been designed to earlier editions, so records should state what was installed and when.

Landlord duties are separate

Minimum smoke and carbon monoxide alarm duties for relevant landlords in England are not the same thing as a complete BS 5839-6 design or a premises-specific HMO fire strategy.
