This guidance is general information. The correct fire safety measures depend on the premises, its use, occupants, fire risk assessment and applicable legal duties.
Five-step approach
GOV.UK summarises the process as identifying hazards, identifying people at risk, evaluating/removing/reducing risk, recording findings and planning/training, and reviewing the assessment.
Record the full assessment
Section 156 changes require responsible persons to record the fire risk assessment in full. These changes came into force on 1 October 2023.
What to consider
The assessment should consider escape routes, detection and warning, firefighting equipment, dangerous substances, evacuation arrangements, vulnerable people and information/training.
Review is ongoing
A fire risk assessment is not a one-off certificate. It should be reviewed regularly and updated when significant changes affect the premises or risk.
